What would you like to know? We buy and sell a LOT of these things and I've seen most good and bad things that can happen.

As someone who's driven a manual MKIV Jetta with frequency, it's good. I enjoy the torqueyness on day to day driving. They may be slow as heck stock, but go HOLYSHIT fast when tuned up. my cousin has a Seat Ibiza TDI (identical mechanically) with a significant tune on stock bits, and it's quite a bit faster than my dad's BMW, shall I say.

Well... there's good ones and there's bad ones, as with any car. We tend to buy higher mileage ones and they are all mostly stock, think in the 80k-200k mile range. While there are plenty of little things that tend to break in the cars, especially the interior pieces like the center armrest and sometimes the interior door handles, the cars are pretty bulletproof when properly maintained. Look for one that has already had a timing belt service since that should definitely be done every 100k miles, and it's not the cheapest if you have to get a shop to do it. The other common issue is with the dual-mass flywheel that VW used, the springs tend to go out and you get a horrible rattling on engagement, it doesn't really hurt anything, but definitely not something I would want a daily to do. I'd say they are good cars, the paint tends to go on them once they hit about 10 years, but what older car doesn't have that problem?

I really don't know what else to say but I'm here if you come up with any questions.

Get a wagon with the TDI and 6 speed. Shifter is buttery smooth but clutch is slightly tricky. Order in brown for maximum Jalop-ness*.

There's a brown one like 70 miles. I don't like the interior really. If I could afford to buy I would change it but as a lease probably not with the light brown/tan leather.

I have a 2013 JSW TDI with the three pedals and first time anybody drives it they are amazed at at the torque. When the Mrs. borrows it she almost always comments that she can't wait to get rid of her DD, 2007 Corolla 5 spd. Before I get hated on she is next for a new car, I supplemented my 2002 Tacoma w/ the JSW.

When driving back from the beach through rural NC it was enjoyable to drop a few gears and hit the "go fast" pedal to pass people.

You will also very quickly learn which stations have "updated" their pumps and which haven't, if they are still the old style "larger" nozzle they won't work with the car. I no longer give Hess/Wilco my business for this reason.

Someone will certainly correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the 2014 a MkVII, while my 2013 is a MKVI. That notwithstanding the changes are largely cosmetic.

Disclaimer: I didn't get the Sunroof or the NAV.

If I get one it won't have the Sunroof or Nav because I know where I'm going and sunroof isn't necessary for me. I don't think the JSW got the updated looks while the sedan did.

A little tricky to master, but I got it pretty quickly... Let me give you a hint. I learned to drive manual on my JSW and so did my uncle (and two of my friends) and at 80k miles it still is on the original clutch!

Kinja'd!!! Sportwägen, Driver Of The Red Sportwagen > norskracer98-ExploringTheOutback

Kinja'd!!!0

It has a really long throw (like a whole foot!!!) and an awkward engagement point but once you figure it out, you will never stall any other manual vehicle ever again.

Ok, yeah. I don't know every term for manuals like "throw" but I really kind of understand what you meant. But it sounds like it's a good clutch to learn on?

If you have a somewhat decent idea of how to use it (like what pedals to press). So, I guess, sure.

This is so true! I learned to drive stick in my mom's 2012 Golf TDI, and there hasn't been a manual car I haven't been a or to drive, and I've driven hundreds of different types because I'm a technician.

I love the long clutch though, maybe that's because it was the first one, or because the other Germans use a long clutch.

I think it is. Because of all that torque, the initial bite is so obvious, it really helps when you're learning. It also really helps to improve your smoothness. If you can shift smoothly in a TDI, you can drive anything smoothly.

Since it's new or nearly new 2014 model you're looking at, it means it has the 2L TDI. It is a big improvement on the 1.9L... big increase in power. The downside is the first ones they sold had premature high pressure fuel pump failures due to Bosch supplying defective parts. That was around 2009. And it's an expensive repair... $2500-$3000. The problem is supposely fixed now. The VW diesels can last 500,000km if you take care of them. At least that was the case with the 1.9L TDIs.

Also the timing belt needs to be changed... and change it at an independent VW specialist... or at a GOOD VW dealer. Some VW dealers are crap... like a certain one in Brampton, Ontario who changed the timing belt on a TDI... and the mechanic set the timing as if it was the gas engine. The person who owned it foolishly didn't take the car right back and just drove it that way (power was down and it wasn't running right) until the timing belt broke and the engine was destroyed.

The EPA fuel economy ratings are pessimistic. People routinely and easily beat them.

The manual transmissions are solid from what I hear.

And the bodies are very solid with excellent rust protection.

There is the typical VW issues of electrical and trim items breaking.

I have a Golf Tdi manual and it's pretty freaking awesome. 50mpg highway, lots of torque everywhere.
